MamaYe, CHR inaugurate maternal death review in Kano

MamaYe and Community Health Research have facilitated the inauguration and training of a facility-based maternal death review committee in Kano State.
MamaYe (Evidence for Action) and Community Health Research (CHR) have facilitated the inauguration and training of a facility-based maternal death review (MDR) committee in Kano State.The Permanent Secretary (PS), Kano State Ministry of Health, Alhaji Dahiru Musa, who inaugurated the committee, explained that the importance of training and retraining couldn’t be overemphasised especially as the content affects human life.Alhaji Dahiru MusaHe said that the State’s Governor, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso was concerned about the lives of the people of the State, especially the high maternal mortality rate.The PS added that “Maternal mortality is unacceptable and it needs to be changed”. He emphasised the need for information as related to maternal death review, as such information would help to know what life-saving strategies to be adopted.While declaring the training open, the PS reinstated the support of the Ministry of Health to the MDR process. He also called on participants to make best use of the opportunity. He later commended the efforts of MamaYe and Community Health Research Nigeria for making maternal death review a reality in Kano State.Secretary of the Kano State MDR Committee, Dr Shehu, in his welcome address said that the impact of MDR is in the facility and prayed that at the end of the training, there would be functional facility based MDR committees across the State.Doctor ShehuIn his good will message, Professor Isa Sadiq Abubakar who represented the National Primary Health Care Management Agency (NPHCDA), indicated that the event was close to the heart of the Agency and that NPHCDA was willing to partner with relevant agencies and organisations.He commended the collaboration of the State Ministry of Health, CHR and MamaYe, and congratulated them for expanding the MDR process across the State.The training was the first of three batches that would be done in the State. During each batch, a team of a record officer, a nurse or a midwife, and a medical doctor of a maternity unit will represent their facilities from 10 facilities within the metropolitan.Trying to know what MDR means?
