CARMMA and African Health Stats – Accountability Made in Africa
In this case study, we describe the involvement of our international team in the re-activation of the Campaign on Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa (CARMMA) from country to regional level by creating a full campaign website hosted by the African Union (AU). A year after the creation of the CARMMA website and scorecards, our team supported a more ambitious project to develop a second-AU hosted and managed website called African Health Stats, launched in November 2014.
For the first time, African Health Stats make it possible to compare and contrast how AU member states are performing in relation to their Maputo Plan of Action and Abuja Declaration commitments. We present the development process and results of these projects as well as the challenges and lessons learned from the experience.
This case study is part of our book, MamaYe Evidence for Action Stories of Change: Selected Case Studies. Through illustrative case studies, we describe how Evidence for Action - MamaYe has strategically combined evidence with advocacy and accountability activities in six countries, across Africa, and globally.
