The process, results, challenges and lessons learned in integrating the maternal death surveillance and response system into the established Public Health Emergency Management system in Ethiopia.

In this case study, we describe the process, results, challenges and lessons learned in integrating the maternal death surveillance and response (MDSR) system into the established Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM) system in Ethiopia.

Maternal deaths became a mandatory reportable condition at the end of 2014 within the country’s PHEM system, which equates to the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response system in other contexts. Evidence for Action Ethiopia was instrumental in developing the national MDSR tools and guidelines, and designing the package of training materials used to extend coverage throughout the country.

This case study is part of our book, MamaYe Evidence for Action Stories of Change: Selected Case Studies. Through illustrative case studies, we describe how Evidence for Action - MamaYe has strategically combined evidence with advocacy and accountability activities in six countries, across Africa, and globally.
